Clinics

Ambulatory care refers to surgeries, diagnostic procedures and treatments that do not require overnight hospitalization.

Louise Marshall Hospital and Palmerston and District Hospital provide various medical clinics through the Ambulatory Care Department.

A physician referral is required.

Diabetes Education

Louise Marshall Hospital and Palmerston and District Hospital offer a wide range of services for adult patients that have Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational diabetes.

Through this education program, patients learn about diabetes and what steps they can take to stay healthy (diet, exercise/activity and medication options).

The Diabetes Education Centre supports inpatients as well as outpatients. If you have been recently diagnosed or have had diabetes for a long time and you would like to receive further education, please ask your family physician to send a referral to us with recent lab work and any medications that you are currently taking.

Services

The Diabetes Education Centre offers the following services:

  • Individual appointments with our Registered Nurses and/or our Registered Dietitians who are certified diabetes educators
  • Visits with an Endocrinologist (Diabetes specialist) with a referral from your physician

What to Bring

Please remember to bring your Health Card, medication list and blood sugar record with you on the day of your appointment.

When you arrive, please register at the switchboard prior to your appointment.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is offered to inpatients at Louise Marshall Hospital and Palmerston District Hospital.

Louise Marshall Hospital also offers outpatient physiotherapy.

Inpatient and outpatient physiotherapy is available for individuals of all ages with musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, and neurological conditions. Patients can be located in any of the divisions in the hospital: medical, obstetrical, surgical, complex continuing care and emergency.

Access to publicly-funded outpatient physiotherapy will be limited to the following criteria listed below.

A referral from a physician or nurse practitioner is mandatory to add your name to the waiting list.

Access Criteria:

  • Seniors (65 years of age and older)
  • Youth (0-19 years of age)
  • Recipients of benefits under the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (approved claim number mandatory), Ontario Disability Support Program, Ontario Works and Family Benefits
  • Post orthopedic surgery and fractures (less than 3 months old)
  • Patients admitted to the hospital overnight and referred by a physician who treated them in the hospital for the condition they were originally admitted for.

 

Waiting List

There is a waiting list for outpatient physiotherapy that is prioritized based on patient needs. Patients that have had surgery or have been discharged from the hospital are given first priority.


Services

Physiotherapy provides the following services:

  • A thorough and detailed assessment of the injury
  • Individualized treatment and exercise program designed for your rehabilitation needs
  • Hands-on treatment (includes manual therapy, modalities and other treatment techniques to enhance recovery)
  • Education and a home exercise program at the time of discharge to maintain improvement and prevent re-injury

Outpatient Physiotherapy hours:

Louise Marshall Hospital: Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with some exceptions

Palmerston & District Hospital: Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with some exceptions

What to Bring

Please remember on the day of your appointment to bring your OHIP card and your requisition with you. Please arrive five minutes before your test to fill in the allotted paperwork. You may wish to wear comfortable clothing and bring a pair of shorts with you. Your assessment will be half an hour to one hour in length depending on your diagnosis

Respiratory Services

Respiratory Therapy services are offered at Louise Marshall Hospital and Palmerston District Hospital for both inpatients and outpatients of all ages.

Diagnostic tests including spirometry and oximetry are performed on an outpatient basis to diagnose and monitor the respiratory status of patients.

In order to have any outpatient tests done you will need a Physician referral.

What to Bring

Please remember on the day of your appointment to bring your Health Card, requisition, an updated medication list, and respiratory medications. Please do not take any of your puffers or smoke the day of your breathing test.  Please do not wear scented products.

Your appointment will be approximately 30 minutes to one hour in length depending on the test.

Adult Services

Adult Speech-Language Pathology Services- Medical

Our Speech-Language Pathologists provide assessment and treatment of communication and swallowing disorders for both inpatient and outpatient adults.  Clients can present with a variety of diagnoses.  Clinicians work on multi-disciplinary professional teams throughout the hospital and provide consultation to family members and community professionals.

Clinical Swallowing Assessment is available for out-patients, and a referral for further specialized videofluroscopic studies may be recommended when a more detailed examination of the swallowing mechanism is required. 

A physician referral is required for these medical adult services.

Adult Speech-Language Pathology Services – Developmental

Speech-Language Pathology services are provided for adults with a developmental disability.  The Speech-Language Pathologist provides assessment, treatment for communication and swallowing disorders.  Clients can present with a variety of developmental disabilities such as Autism or Down Syndrome.  Clinicians work with several community partners.   A referral from the Ministry of Community and Social Services,

District Services Ontario- Central West Region (1-888-941-1121) is required to access this service.

Dialysis

Palmerston and District Hospital (PDH) is a satellite Dialysis unit of the Grand River Renal Program.

The Dialysis Unit supports stable patients requiring dialysis in our area to decrease the need for travel to and from Grand River Hospital. Dialysis Unit Nurses are responsible for patients while they are on dialysis at PDH. The Nurses monitor patient progress, manage routine dialysis problems and can help patients learn more about dialysis.

A physician referral is required.
